Travel Etiquette You Should Know When Travelling To Asia

Asia has many beautiful places to visit. And remember that Asia is not only China or Japan. There are many other beautiful countries worth travelling for. That’s why, it will never get bored to explore this continent. However, there has been stereotypes gong around of western travelers for being loud, rude, and gullible especially when visiting Asian countries. Hence, travel etiquette is important thing to know about.

However, it is not only applied to western travelers but all travelers around the world. Having travel etiquette means you travel responsibly, avoid offending the locals, and respect diversity. And here are what you need to do:

Choose what to dress when packing

In some of Asian countries, wearing too revealing clothes can cause troubles. It is more about how they adopt different cultures than the people in the west. Many Asian cultures prefer modest dress code. Hence, it is recommended to go for non-revealing clothes. However, make sure that what you wear will be comfortable for you to move around freely. Instead of shorts or mini skirt, you can go for long skirt or trousers. Or, you can bring variety of layers such as scarf, cardigan, jumper, etc.

Be mindful with personal space

Keep in mind that not everyone is fine with skin-ship especially with strangers. In western culture maybe it is fine to hug people you just met on the street. However, Asian people are more conscience of body contact and personal space with strangers. For example in India, men are not allowed to touch women in public since doing so is considered disrespectful. It is also related to some beliefs and religion. Therefore, it is suggested that you keep an arm-length space between yourself and others when you are in Asian countries.

Avoid being judgemental

Keep in mind that every place may have different cultures and beliefs. Avoid criticizing the differences you face when visiting new places. Just because it is different from what you believe doesn’t mean you can judge it as wrong. For example, you will be served with variety of foods when you are invited for a meal in China. Instead of criticizing or judging the many foods or taste, try everything and give compliments to the cook. You don’t have to eat all the foods though.

Be mindful with how you address someone

Asian people are known for being polite and friendly but make sure that you don’t cross the boundaries. In Asian countries, the younger people should show respect to the older ones such as by not calling the first names. If you are confused about this, just go for formality. Hence, use the English courtesy title such as Mr, Mrs, or Miss.

Stay respectful and enjoy the trip

Generally, you just need to use your common sense to be able to avoid any conflict when travelling regardless of the destination. Being respectful is like the most basic attitude you should show to everyone you meet. That way, you will be able to enjoy the trip without a fuss.
