Even though hotels policy guarantee privacy to all guests, there is still a risk of your belonging being snooped or examined by hotel maids. It is not just rumor because there was a case of hotel maids messing with the guest’s belonging even though they didn’t take anything. It is still considered privacy violation. How to make sure that your belongings are safe while you leave your hotel room?

How to keep your belongings safe and untouched in your hotel room

Hotel managers will not be able to keep monitoring their housekeepers 24 hours. Also, it is unlikely of them to hire people with criminal minds. Hence, there is always risk of your belongings being snooped at by housekeeper regardless the reputation of the hotel you stay at. However, you can prevent it from happening by taking necessary precautions, such as:

Use the in-room safe to keep your belongings especially the valuable ones such as jewelry or money. The only people who can open it is you and the hotel manager who hold the key. The housekeepers won’t be able to open it. Therefore, your belongings will stay untouched. There was a case when in-room safe was raided by housekeeper but the chance is very low. 

Then, always assume that your hotel room is not as private as you think. Do not treat it like you are in your home. They are different regardless how hotel guarantee your privacy being protected. There is always chance that theft could take place. Therefore, always be mindful when placing your belongings. Do not just let your valuable ones scattered across the room. Even if the housekeeper didn’t have the intention to take anything initially, they might end up taking it if the opportunity faces them like that. 

Also, it is highly suggested to keep your belonging well-organized during your stay. Reduce the clutter as possible as you can. If you let your room so messy, the housekeepers have o move some items to make it clean and tidy. Hence, they will touch your belongings like it or not. Do not let your items splayed everywhere. Keep them organized to minimize of losing something that you could end up assuming as thievery. It will be so embarrassing if you carelessly accusing housekeepers while in fact you leave important items all over the place making it hidden somewhere invisible. 

If you don’t want housekeepers to touch anything or even enter your room while you are out, leave a note with ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on your door so no one will enter your room. This way, you will feel more confident that no one will rummage through your bag or sneak a peak at your personal journal. You can ask for housekeeping service when you comeback to your room. If something missing, try to search through your room first before making any accusation. If your item is lost then talk to the manager and ask for solution.
