Learn More About Orphanage Tourism And Its Damaging Effects

Learn More About Orphanage Tourism And Its Damaging Effects

You might have heard about orphanage tourism where travelers come and volunteer themselves to be involved in the the lives of children care during their visit. They also help to fund the orphanage  or help raising donations. The intention of this is so meaningful for the children because they deserve a better life. However, sometimes the reality is not as magical as that. There have been many cases reported how orphanage tourism is in reality a business operation where communities are exploited and damaged instead.

So where do we go from here?

The concept of orphanage tourism is already good because it allows travelers to help the communities by volunteering through various activities. They can also experience the real lives of the orphan while travelling and exploring the world. Not to mention that the majority of travelers who volunteer are coming from wealthy family. They have genuine hope to help the children get better lives with their contribution especially in developing countries. However, there are also dark sides that everyone should see from this kind of tourism and how it can be damaging to the communities.

Negative sides of orphanage tourism

The statistics show that the number of orphanages in some countries keep increasing each year while the number of orphaned children doesn’t. So what does that mean then? Isn’t orphanage is a shelter for orphaned children?

There is a reality of manipulation and exploitation done by irresponsible people who are taking advantage of vulnerable communities. They know that many travelers are moved to help and donate money to the orphanage they visit. They recognize the good intentions while trying to make a good profit out of it. Many children aho are not even orphans are taken from their parents through a promise of a better life in the city. Both parents and children are promised good education and care and this is why they are willing to do what they are told to.

Another negative side of orphanage tourism is easy access that travelers have to be in close contact with vulnerable children. Travelers are basically strangers to the children regardless of how good their intention is. Also, not all travelers have the children’s best interest at heart. Allowing them intimate access to children is dangerous and can be damaging to the children.

Even if the travelers who visit have good intention to help taking care of the children, it is still not ideal for the children to be in constant change of care from an ever-changing group especially in the long term. The constant rotation may confuse the children who are basically vulnerable. It may create attachment disorder which can affect their life in the long run.

Seeing how orphanage tourism can be beneficial and damaging at the same time might put everyone, especially travelers who are only meant to help, in a major dilemma. And it is time for everyone to find better alternatives about ending orphanage tourism while still giving the best support to he children.

They do this since this is how people are familiar with the sites. This might imply that the lovely resort you’ve chosen is actually 20-30 minutes out of town along a highway. Often, these resorts are also half a kilometer or a kilometer and a half from the main roads.

Not Looking at the Traffic Before Going Anywhere

A short trip to the beach might take three or four hours in heavy traffic. Take the path less traveled before you or your vehicle overheats. Examine the traffic patterns over the week to choose the optimum time for your getaway. You can’t go wrong if you leave at daybreak or on a Sunday morning. Even yet, construction or road work might derail your trip plans and have you thinking about the Jetsons’ flying automobile.

Letting the Family Glued to the Phone

How many times you see parents and kids getting busy with their own gadget while on family vacation?

Take a holiday tech break. Read a book with your child, sign up for Balinese dancing or cooking class, and discover new ways to be creative together during your time in the Bali family beach resort. Here’s a tip: lock up your family’s cell phones when on vacation, or limit them to 30 minutes at the end of the day. This is a fantastic method to organize technology while also creating psychological space for self-reflection and mindfulness.

Not Balancing Activities with Some Chill Time

Some people get quite ambitious with their holiday. They try to stuff more places they can visit in Bali on the itinerary. Things can get sour quickly once the rain decided to pour or when the road get congested.

Running around all summer without a moment to spare leads to burnout. Make sure to leave space for down time. Quiet, creative activities, such as reading or playing an instrument, have a natural rejuvenating effect. Find the right balance and avoid those frantic feelings that cause meltdowns and fatigue.

Outline, for example, what you like best about your rental and why you were drawn to your place. If you have business-specific social media profiles, encourage them to follow so they can get a better idea of where they’re heading and what you’re all about.

Travel Etiquette You Should Know When Travelling To Asia

Travel Etiquette You Should Know When Travelling To Asia

Asia has many beautiful places to visit. And remember that Asia is not only China or Japan. There are many other beautiful countries worth travelling for. That’s why, it will never get bored to explore this continent. However, there has been stereotypes gong around of western travelers for being loud, rude, and gullible especially when visiting Asian countries. Hence, travel etiquette is important thing to know about.

However, it is not only applied to western travelers but all travelers around the world. Having travel etiquette means you travel responsibly, avoid offending the locals, and respect diversity. And here are what you need to do:

Choose what to dress when packing

In some of Asian countries, wearing too revealing clothes can cause troubles. It is more about how they adopt different cultures than the people in the west. Many Asian cultures prefer modest dress code. Hence, it is recommended to go for non-revealing clothes. However, make sure that what you wear will be comfortable for you to move around freely. Instead of shorts or mini skirt, you can go for long skirt or trousers. Or, you can bring variety of layers such as scarf, cardigan, jumper, etc.

Be mindful with personal space

Keep in mind that not everyone is fine with skin-ship especially with strangers. In western culture maybe it is fine to hug people you just met on the street. However, Asian people are more conscience of body contact and personal space with strangers. For example in India, men are not allowed to touch women in public since doing so is considered disrespectful. It is also related to some beliefs and religion. Therefore, it is suggested that you keep an arm-length space between yourself and others when you are in Asian countries.

Avoid being judgemental

Keep in mind that every place may have different cultures and beliefs. Avoid criticizing the differences you face when visiting new places. Just because it is different from what you believe doesn’t mean you can judge it as wrong. For example, you will be served with variety of foods when you are invited for a meal in China. Instead of criticizing or judging the many foods or taste, try everything and give compliments to the cook. You don’t have to eat all the foods though.

Be mindful with how you address someone

Asian people are known for being polite and friendly but make sure that you don’t cross the boundaries. In Asian countries, the younger people should show respect to the older ones such as by not calling the first names. If you are confused about this, just go for formality. Hence, use the English courtesy title such as Mr, Mrs, or Miss.

Stay respectful and enjoy the trip

Generally, you just need to use your common sense to be able to avoid any conflict when travelling regardless of the destination. Being respectful is like the most basic attitude you should show to everyone you meet. That way, you will be able to enjoy the trip without a fuss.
